Signs of a healthy relationship are when:

  • you and your partner respect each other’s feelings, opinions, and boundaries.
  • you talk openly and honestly with each other. You listen and try to understand each other.
  • you build trust by being reliable and truthful.
  • both partners have equal say in decisions and one person is not controlling.
  • you feel safe physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Ways to stay safe:

  • Know that it is okay to say no to things that make you uncomfortable and that your feelings are important.
  • Know that if something feels wrong, it’s important to speak up and get help.
  • Talk openly with a friend or someone in your family or that you trust about your relationship.
  • Be independent by having your own hobbies, interests, and friendships outside of the relationship. It’s healthy to have your own space.
  • Know that you have the right to be treated with kindness and respect. No one has the right to harm you physically, emotionally, or sexually.

What to do if you feel unsafe:

  • Talk to a trusted adult or call a helpline phone number to get help.
  • Have a plan for how to stay safe if you feel threatened or feel that you are in danger.
  • Get help straight away by calling emergency services if you’re in immediate danger.

Remember:

  • You deserve to be in a healthy and safe relationship.
  • It’s important to know and respect your own boundaries.
  • Trust your instincts and seek help if you feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
