Keeping Sane

Feeling alone and isolated when you are a parent and /or carer of a person with a disability seems to be the common thread we all have. At some time in our journey, the impact of our family situation hits us extremely hard and the realisation that this is our life creates an avalanche of emotions. Reaching out to others for help can often feel difficult and daunting but it’s so important to connect with people on a social level.

Joining a support group for parents with special needs children is a great way to connect with others who are in a similar situation. For me, it was so vital to get out of the house, and basically saved my sanity. Keeping up with friends for socialising and support or joining a social group to meet new ones is another way to feel supported. Family members can be of great value for respite and support too.

These all help us as parents/carers to feel included and valued.  We are all doing an amazing job and we need to have fun too!
