Loud and Clear Qld Self Advocacy Conference 2024: Dream Big and “Bee” the Best I Can Bee

 

On October 9th and 10th, 2024, the Loud and Clear Qld Self Advocacy Conference was a “Hive” of excitement.  Individuals with disabilities, carers, families and industry came together across Australia for a transformative experience centered on the theme “Dream Big: ‘Bee’ the Best I Can Bee.” This year’s event was a vibrant celebration of self-advocacy, empowerment, and community connection.

Inspiring Morning Sessions

The conference kicked off with a series of powerful presentations and learning experiences from an incredible lineup of guest speakers, including community leaders, healthcare professionals, dynamic support services, and individuals with disabilities who shared their stories. Each speaker brought unique perspectives and experiences, emphasising the importance of dreaming big and thinking creatively about one’s future. 

The stories resonated with attendees, illustrating that barriers can be overcome and dreams can be achieved. The motivating narratives served as a reminder that self-advocacy is a vital part of personal growth, encouraging participants to embrace their unique journeys and aspirations . The messages resonated deeply, reminding everyone that with courage and creativity, we can achieve great things.

Attendees left these sessions feeling energised and equipped with new perspectives on self-advocacy and personal growth.

A BUZZ of Afternoon Activities

The afternoon was filled with excitement as participants dove into the “Come and Try” activities. These interactive workshops provided a fantastic opportunity for attendees to explore new interests, from arts, music, and dance to adaptive sports (supported BMX bike riding, skateboarding and martial arts). The buzz of laughter and chatter filled the air as people tried their hand at different activities, each one designed to spark curiosity and encourage social interaction.

Community organisations were present to showcase their programs, creating a bridge between attendees and local resources. This vibrant marketplace of ideas and activities allowed participants to connect with others who share similar passions and interests, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

Building Connections and Empowerment

The Loud and Clear Qld Self Advocacy Conference not only highlighted the importance of dreaming big but also emphasised the power of connection. By bringing together individuals with disabilities, families, advocates, and community organisations, the conference created a supportive and inclusive space where everyone could learn, grow, and inspire one another.

Exciting Launches

The conference also featured several significant launches that added to the excitement of the event. The Self Advocacy Resource Unit (SARU) announced the inaugural National Self Advocacy Day, marking a crucial step in promoting awareness and recognition of self-advocacy across Australia.

In another highlight, Team Musicare unveiled the launch of the Sunshine Coast Team Musicare at The Station, a fantastic initiative aimed at linking the power of music and support for individuals with disabilities.

Additionally, Country to Coast Qld launched the Healthy Together Project, which involved Loud and Clear members in creating educational videos for healthcare professionals, ensuring that voices from the community are heard in health education.

Lastly, the Bamboo Projects introduced their new disability-accessible boat, further promoting inclusivity, environmental  and adventure for all.

A Night to Remember

The Loud and Clear Concert  was held on the last night of the conference, which culminated in a vibrant dance party that brought everyone together to celebrate inclusion and acceptance. With live bands and captivating performances, the atmosphere was electric. Attendees danced the night away, fully embracing the joy of inclusivity. It was a fantastic way to unwind, connect, and celebrate the spirit of dreaming big.

Everyone had a blast, creating memories that will last long after the event. The energy of the dance party perfectly encapsulated the conference’s theme, as participants truly showcased their best selves in a joyous celebration of life and community.

The Loud and Clear Qld Self Advocacy Conference not only highlighted dreams and aspirations but also provided tools and community connections needed to turn dreams into reality.  We will be back in 2025.
