Payge’s Story – Professional Development for Support Workers

Hi,

My name is Payge, I have an intellectual disability but that doesn’t stop me from achieving the things I love to do. I work for Parent 2 Parent – an organisation where we support people with disabilities and their families.

One of the projects I do is presenting. I attended Alliance where I talked to a group of support workers on the importance of taking care of their clients.  I believe that the way support workers get better at their job is by getting to know the person with disabilities.

I love doing presentations because for me it gives people the opportunity to learn and ask questions about the topic that has been discussed by a person with a disability. They get to learn about people with disabilities from people with disabilities.

I hope in the future that I do more presentations like this because it builds my confidence with public speaking, I learn more and more and the most important thing is: it gives the audience the opportunity of learning in a different way to how they are used to learning, especially from a person with a disability.

If you want to learn more, you can read my story on the Parent 2 Parent website. It will be on page 2 and is called Professional Development for Support Workers.
