Katrina’s Inspiring Journey with Stand By Me

Katrina’s journey with the Stand By Me project is a story of growth, empowerment, and finding her voice.

Before joining Stand By Me, Katrina felt stuck, unseen, and lacked routine. She attended programs where she didn’t feel valued or respected as an individual. She didn’t understand her rights or how to advocate for herself. Katrina described herself as “the quiet person in the corner” who didn’t speak up. She had potential but needed the right opportunity to shine.

At first, Katrina wasn’t sure if she could be a peer facilitator. She doubted herself and felt overwhelmed by the idea. But with support, practice, and encouragement, she started to believe in herself.

She gave it go, and in no time added key tools to her capabilities toolkit:

  • Public speaking skills: She gained confidence to speak to groups.
  • Facilitation skills: she learned to guide and share knowledge.
  • Advocacy skills: she learned how to stand up for her rights.
  • Practical skills: she mastered teamwork, planning, and problem-solving.
  • Community awareness: she built meaningful connections and understanding with peers.

As a peer facilitator, Katrina initially doubted herself. But with practice, she found confidence and joy in sharing knowledge and helping others grow. She facilitated sessions on:

  • Emergency services
  • Relationships and boundaries
  • Budgeting and employment
  • Community safety

Katrina’s journey has been life-changing. She now has;

  • An empowered voice: she confidently speaks up for herself and others.
  • Control: Katrina is in charge of her life and NDIS plan.
  • Confidence: She knows her worth and stands firm.
  • Empathy: She connects better with others.
  • Pride: Katrina inspires others by sharing her story.

Katrina’s advice? Give it a go! Even if you’re unsure, the skills you’ll gain can change your life. With P2P, you’ll never be alone. As Katrina says, “I CAN DO IT. And so can you.”
