What’s On September: Central Queensland

What's On Gladstone

What’s on in Central Queensland

September is set to be a busy and exciting month for Parent to Parent in Central Queensland, with a range of opportunities to connect, learn, and contribute.

Stand By Me Peer Group

On Tuesday, 9 September, the Stand By Me Peer Group will meet, offering a supportive space for people to come together, share experiences, and build connections. The following week, on Tuesday, 16 September, the My Time Peer Group will provide parents and carers with an opportunity to take a break, connect with others, and enjoy a supportive environment.

Speak Up in the Bush

For those wanting to build their confidence and skills, the Speak Up in the Bush – Advocacy Skills 2 Workshop will be held on Wednesday, 17 September. This session follows on from Advocacy Skills 1 and focuses on interpreting words and body language, using voice and body language effectively, strategies for staying calm, and developing thought processes. Through role-play, real-life examples, and hands-on activities, participants will strengthen their ability to advocate for themselves in everyday situations.

Inclusion Australia: Disability Discrimination Act

Later in the month, on Thursday, 25 September from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, Inclusion Australia will host a Consultation on the Disability Discrimination Act at the Gladstone Library Meeting Room, 39 Goondoon Street, Gladstone. This focus group is specifically for people with an intellectual disability, and feedback provided will help shape a national submission to government as part of the Act’s review. Participants will receive a gift card for their contribution, and places are limited. RSVP by 17 September to Gaye: gaye@p2pqld.org.au or phone 4979 2777 or 0491 200 120.

The Disability Discrimination Act is being reviewed for the first time in 30 years, following recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission. The consultation will explore key areas such as updating the definitions of “disability” and “discrimination,” preventing discrimination before it happens, making organisations more inclusive, improving protections for people with disability, strengthening government rules, and clarifying when different treatment may apply. This is an important opportunity for people with disability to have their say and ensure their voices shape the future of disability rights in Australia.

Have your say – make it known to make it better – Speak up and be heard.
