What is Wear It Purple Day — And How Can We Support It?

Wear it Purple Day

Each year, thousands of Australians come together for Wear It Purple Day, a national day of significance that shines a light on the importance of safe, supportive and inclusive environments for LGBTQIA+ young people.

Started by students in 2010, Wear It Purple Day was created in response to the alarming rates of bullying, harassment and mental health challenges faced by rainbow youth. The simple act of wearing purple has since grown into a powerful movement of love, acceptance and visibility.

This year, on Friday, 30 August 2025, communities, schools, workplaces and families across the country will once again put on purple to show LGBTQIA+ young people they are seen, supported and respected — just as they are.
