A Unique Opportunity to Explore Disability Housing Options On the Sunshine Coast

Understanding the housing options available for people with disability can be a confusing and often overwhelming process. From navigating unfamiliar terms to making informed choices that suit individual needs, many families and people with disability find themselves facing uncertainty when it comes to future living arrangements.

That’s why the recent Disability Housing Bus Tour, organised by local disability support organisation Parent to Parent (P2P), was such a welcomed initiative.

The half-day tour took attendees on a guided journey through a variety of housing options across the Sunshine Coast, including Independent Living, SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation), STA (Short-Term Accommodation), SIL (Supported Independent Living), and Respite Housing.

The goal was to provide a relaxed and practical way for attendees to better understand the different types of accommodation available in their local area.

More than just a drive-by, the tour provided a unique opportunity for participants to see real homes, ask questions directly to housing providers and support staff, and gain a deeper understanding of what each model of housing truly offers. It’s also offered an opportunity to learn about options that many may not have previously considered.

Housing is not one-size-fits-all, and having the chance to view a variety of options firsthand helps ensure that people are able to find a home that suits their preferences, lifestyle, and support needs. For families supporting a loved one with disability, or for anyone exploring more independent or supported living arrangements, tours and events like the one hosted by P2P could be a pivotal step in the decision making process.

Importantly, initiatives like this reflect a broader movement towards supporting people with disability to make informed choices about their own lives.

If you are interested in another bus tour or to learn more about P2P and the great initiatives we’re involved in we’d love to hear from you!
