Payge’s Take on Easy Read Communication

Payge's take on easy read documents

Why should information be easy to understand?

I struggle with documents that have too much information or if there’s nobody to help me discuss what is being said in the document.  If there are acronyms I will struggle because it won’t make sense.

We need to make sure documents are easy to understand, short and simple not just for me but for other people with intellectual disabilities as well.

My right to be given information in a way I can understand is important to me.  I need time to think about what has been said and have time to process it so I know how to respond.

At Parent to Parent, I work on documents to make sure they are very simple for people with disabilities to read.  People with disabilities need to be able to ask questions if they don’t understand.

I also check to see if the documents are short, simple and easy to understand. I make sure documents have pictures so people who don’t like reading can understand and have easy access to them.

It is important to get directions when you need them. For example, a website should only have one or two clicks so I can find what I am looking for easily.
