Benefits of volunteering
Volunteering can teach you many things when deciding what to do in your life.
It teaches you a great way to build your work skills, your confidence and make friends through social connections. It is also good for your mental health.
I started volunteering at 2 places, looking after animals. It was new for me. Some animals were nice, cute and comforting to work with but some weren’t, I wasn’t confident in cleaning out certain animal enclosures – they looked scary and sometimes chased me when they sensed my fear. The little devils. I blame the geese.
With not just cleaning windows and making sure the animal enclosures are clean, watered and fed and mopped in my volunteer role. I also got to help capture injured birds, pelicans, wallabies and possums, well I just fed the possums since they are dangerous and I was just a volunteer and not licensed or confident to do so. Some days I even volunteered to release birds back into the wild where they belong.
Sometimes when you volunteer at places that you love, you can actually get a paid job. Through volunteering for years I eventually got a great paid job which I love and where I can be sassy, cheeky and myself – but not all the time!
