NAIDOC Week 2022

Welcome to NAIDOC Week 2022. Amelia is one of our wonderful Support Coordinators, and also a proud Torres Strait Island woman. Here she shares at little about what NAIDOC means to her.

Kapu Goeyga (Good Day),

I am Amelia David, of Kulkalgal and Guda Malulagal Nations of Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait).

Blessed to have grown up on Ngurapai (Horn Island) and although I live in Brisbane, I often travel back ‘home’ to Zenadth Kes for family and cultural events.

NAIDOC to me is a celebration of our people’s achievements, in this contemporary society.  Despite the many challenges we face, we are still here and continue to practise our language, culture and tradition.  In this year’s theme, as a proud Zenadth Kes Women, I know I will always “Get up, Stand up and Show up” for my people.

I am honoured to  come from a family who have been actively involved with ensuring positive change, in a culturally appropriate manner for our families still living in Zenadth Kes.  I am proud of my heritage and culture, and share some photos of my beautiful Zenadth Kes.
