Four movie picks that link to the month of May

Another Month gone! Where does the time go? Well as April’s big events come and go as well as another month of life changing event’s, we welcome May into our lives, as the cold starts catching up, those with windows can close them for the cool air, and those with air-con can switch to warm.

And for this month like last month we look at a list of awareness days and holidays and try to relate a movie to it to celebrate or just to enjoy the time to sit back and enjoy some films. For this month I’m listing seven big films that can help make your days special whether it be for Mother’s Day or for something as light fun as Flight Attendant Day.

#1 May 10th World Lupus Day: Beyond The Universe (2022)

A rather unknown film to the wider world, but one I think is truly important to highlight due to the very limited amount of films that touch on the topic of lupus disease. Follow the story of Nina, a dedicated pianist that has lupus that meets a doctor named Gabriel who is kind and fun and slowly Nina starts to fall in love. A wonderful love story about building ones confidence to achieve their dreams despite their conditions.

#2 May 11th Mother’s Day: Freaky Friday (2003)

There are plenty of movies about motherhood, but some don’t embrace the chaotic hilarity it can be quite like Freaky Friday, where a stern doctor mother and her rebellious teen daughter swap bodies. Through this incident they need to sort out the issues and responsibilities they both face in their lives. A super funny comedy and a heartwarming story that highlights the fun nature and rough but caring bonds between a mother and child.

#3 May 12th International ME/CFS Awareness Day: Unrest (2017)

A wonderful documentary that chronicles the events of a woman named Jennifer Brea and her struggles with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME/CFS for short. Through her experiences with her supporting husband, they are able to showcase the wide range of people this disease effects, breaks down the stigma of it being considered a lazy stereotype and showcases the pain and struggles that comes with one’s social life and personal life. An incredibly touching documentary that can truly help those who are affected by this condition to know how beautiful life can be in all its simple and grand ways.

#4 May 15th International Kangaroo Awareness Day: Kangaroo Jack (2003)

A funny easy to watch film that I’ve selected to represent International Kangaroo Awareness Day. A film that I would say feels like a tour guide comedy of the Australian outback, with lots of slapstick humor that a ton of kids could enjoy with a rather action packed adventure to boot.

#5 May 25th World Thyroid Day: The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

Perhaps to some the greatest love story of the 2010’s movie scene. The Fault in our Stars presents the story of young love facing different forms of cancer, with the main character in Hazel Grace suffering from Thyroid cancer. An absolutely heartbreaking and heartwarming film about optimism in the face of difficult circumstances, and one that can touch the heart of many a romantic.

#6 May 30th Multiple Sclerosis Day: Duet for One (1986)

A touching drama about a world class violinist who develops Multiple Sclerosis and begins to lose her ability to play as well as it affecting her personal life. But through her determination she is able to find courage to keep facing the challenges head on with strength and power. A must watch for people who are living with and impacted by Multiple Sclerosis.

#7 May 31st International Flight Attendant Day: View from the Top (2003)

Having an all-star cast in a cheerful comedy filled with over the top moments and possibly some hectic day to day events that happen with being a Flight Attendant. If you’re looking to just sit back, have a couple of laughs and enjoy the journey of a young hopeful girl wanting to make a better life for herself, this is a good movie to just have fun with.

With that comes another month of movies I hope you all enjoy or at least give you a fun time to decompress from your stresses. Remember that it’s always good to keep checking in with yourself and also giving yourself a break when things get hectic like some of these films have shown. I wish you all a great month and will see you in the next one.
