Accessible Communication: Connecting, Including, and Empowering

Disability Action Week 2024 will take place from November 24 to December 1, focusing on the theme “Accessible communication: connect, include and empower.” This initiative encourages everyone to engage in conversations that foster a more accessible and inclusive environment.

What is Accessible Communication?

Accessible communication ensures that everyone can access information, regardless of their needs. The first step is to ask individuals how they prefer to receive information—be it face-to-face, over the phone, or in various formats like Easy Read documents or text suitable for screen readers.

Meeting these needs can involve using plain language, selecting appropriate fonts and sizes, or including image descriptions. By making information accessible across all platforms, we enable everyone to participate fully.

Accessible vs. Inclusive Communication

While accessible communication focuses on removing barriers for people with disabilities, inclusive communication emphasises using respectful and non-exclusionary language. For instance, many individuals with autism prefer to be referred to as autistic.

Why It Matters?

Accessible communication fosters connection and community, making individuals feel welcome and valued. It leads to increased participation in events, sports, and volunteer opportunities, ultimately enhancing workplace inclusivity. For more resources, check out guidelines from the Australian Human Rights Commission and the Department of education. Together, we can improve communication for everyone.
