From the Plan Managers – August 2026 – Do all supports have a price limit?
You have received your NDIS funding but did you know that supports set out in an NDIS Plan can be subject to price regulation in different ways? It is important to understand how the NDIA have set this out so you can understand how your funding can best work for you.
Do all supports have a price limit?
The NDIA has determined the pricing arrangements and price limits that will apply to your supports and the supports of other NDIS participants who have been approved for funding. They have done this so the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can continue for the long term.
They have issued a number of documents to assist participants, providers, plan managers and other support people to understand these price limits and you may hear these mentioned from time to time. These are some of those documents:
- NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (and Addenda) which sets out the general pricing arrangements that apply to all supports in the NDIS and specific arrangements that apply to individual supports
- NDIS Support Catalogue which provides information on the current price limits and claim types for each support item
Your support items that are subject to a price limit usually have a single national price limit. Higher price limits can apply if you live in a remote or very remote area.
Also, your supports can be subject to price regulation in different ways. These include:
Price controlled supports (price limit)
Price controlled supports are claimed from your plan when they are reasonable and necessary to meet your needs and are subject to the conditions set out in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits.
Where a support has a price limit your provider cannot agree to a price with you that is greater than the price limit. As with all NDIS services and supports, you still have the right to negotiate a price lower than the maximum limit set by the NDIA.
These supports are subject to the general claiming rules and can only be claimed for after they have been delivered.
Quotable supports
Initially, your provider should provide a quotation to the NDIA for the support item and, if approved, it will become a stated item in your plan. Examples of some items that you would need to get a quotation for are:
- Home modifications
- Specialised disability accommodation
- Specialised transport
- High cost disability related health consumables
- Certain Assistive Technology
- Specialised Driver training
Quotable supports can only be claimed from your plan if the support is specifically included in your plan. They are also subject to the conditions set out in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits.
Support items that do not have a price limit
Some supports are not subject to price control and should only be claimed from your plan when they are reasonable and necessary to meet your needs. They are subject to the ‘other’ conditions set out in the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits
Where a support item does not have a price limit then you and your provider should agree on a reasonable price for the support. You should also agree on the billing schedule for the support e.g. claimed weekly. These supports are also subject to the general claiming rules and can only be claimed for after they have been delivered.
Examples of some items and supports that are not subject to price control but have a ‘notional’ unit price for claiming purposes are:
- Low Cost consumables (no more than $1,500)
- Activity Based Transport
- Provider travel (non-labour costs)
There may still be limits to how you can access these services, and how much you can claim within your plan. For example, you may have a price range for the purchase of a specific assistive technology item or a limit on the amount in your budget. All claims you make still need to be affordable within your plan and funding periods.
So when you are considering spending some of your NDIS funding, take a little time to think about whether the support you are considering does have a price limit and/or is included in your Plan. If you are unsure then check before you spend. Ask your Plan Manager for help or contact your MyNDIS contact person.
